FAMILY:
Bluebell Family (Campanulaceae)
DESCRIPTION:
This native perennial can be found growing 2 - 6', the light to dark blue
flowers are flattened unlike most bellflowers. They grow in clusters along the
spike-like stem to the top and are 3/4" to 1" wide. The style is long and often
curving and recurving.
FLOWERS:
July to September
HABITAT:
Moist banks and along woodland margins, rich woods and thickets.
OTHER INFORMATION:
This is a member of the Bluebell family (Campanulacea) whose flowers aren't
particularly bell-like.
American Indians used a leaf tea to treat coughs and tuberculosis. Crushed root
was used for whooping cough.
