Indian Cucumber Root

(Medeloa virginiana)

 

Habitat:  Along seapage areas in rich woods and bog margins.
Comments:  The root is white, and it smells and tastes like a cucumber.  It was used by the Indians as food, but the plant is now scarce in many areas.

Plants that are going to flower put out two tiers of leaves, with the flowers arising from the second tier. Plants that aren't blooming in a given year have only the lower tier.
