Symphyotrichum prenanthoides
This branched 1-3' plant has a smooth, zigzag stem, but the upper part may have hairs in lines. The lance-shaped to elliptical leaves narrow into a broadly winged stalk. The wings expand at the base and clasp the stem. The numerous, pale violet to white 1" flowers are on short stalks and have 20-30 rays. The spreading, linear bracts are green-ribbed. Blooms August-October in wet areas, swamp edges, stream sides.
