Silene latifolia ssp. alba
Erect, with branched root. Stems with hairs on lower section, glandular near top. Leaves egg-shaped, lower leaves 2–4 in., reducing in size upward. Flowers erect on short stalks or sessile, open in afternoon. Calyx 1/2–3/4 in. inflated, petals white, tips wide, deeply notched into 2 lobes, 2 appendages above each petal in center of flower dividing into 2 lobes. Male flowers with 10 stamens and female flowers with 5 styles are on separate plants. Grows in fields, along roads, at low elevations.
