Shale Barren Goldenrod

Flowers June to August.
Basal leaves are coriaceous, broadly elliptic to ovate, truncate at the base, long petiolate, toothed to sub-entire and up to 12 inches long. Stem leaves are smaller and narrower. Inflorescence is narrow or divergent. Involucre is less than 1/4 inch bearing 9-15 disc flowers and about 5 rays. Long considered a shale barren endemic, it occurs even more frequently on limestone and dolomite substrates. It occurs on dry rocky woodlands, barrens and outcrops.
