Identification: Plant 5 to 15 inches in height. Flower white with 4 to 9 "petals" (usually 5) ("petals" are actually sepals). Fruit globular with hooked apices. Leaves divided into 3 or 5 leaflets, but usually 3. Plant 12 to 16 inches in height.
Similar Species: Mountain Anemone is most likely to be confused with Wood Anemone. The leaves of Wood Anemone are mostly divided into 5 leaflets, but those of Mountain Anemone are usually in 3's. Mountains Anemone is a tall, larger plant (up to 16 inches). Wood Anemone is usually between 4 and 8 inches tall.
Distribution: Found in a small area of the east including Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, and South Carolina.
Habitat: Mountain Anemone is found in moist forest usually in the high hills or mountains.
Flowering period: April to June.
