Erect shrubs with alternate entire leaves and small nodding greenish, purple flowers in terminal corymbs or umbels. The flowers are 4-lobed or 4-toothed with 8 stamens. Leaves are rough hairy. Often confused with azaleas when not in flower. Bloom from May to July usually in higher elevations.
