Eastern Prickly Pear

Identification: Flowers yellow, large, showy, with multiple petals. Center of flower sometimes tinged with red. Stems consisting of jointed fleshy pads with tufts of bristles and with occasional spines (spines more common in western populations). Plant usually prostrate on ground.
Distribution: Throughout the eastern and central United States except for northern New England.
Habitat: Prickly Pear is found on sandy or rocky soil. Shale barrens are a favorite habitat.
Flowering period: June to August.
Similar Species: Prickly Pear is the only common cactus east of the Mississippi River.
