Identification: Flowers white and hanging in drooping clusters from the stem. Floral bracts more than 5 (usually 7-8) in number. Stem waxy and dull red. Leaves deeply divided into three parts, appearing to be three leaflets. Plant 1 to 5 feet in height.
Distribution: Southeastern Canada westward to Michigan and southward to Georgia.
Habitat: Gall-of-the-Earth is found on open slopes and clearings as well as thickets.
Flowering period: September to October.
Similar Species: The three-part leaves of Gall-of-the-Earth are distinctive for this species of Prenanthes.
