Thin-leaved Sunflower

Identification: Ray florets golden yellow and disk florets yellow. Leaves mostly opposite, but some alternate toward the top of the plant. Leaves thin, ovate-lanceolate with a fine pubescence on the underside. Outer margin of leaf finely serrate. Base of leaf tapering abruptly and running down the upper sides of the leaf petiole. Plant 2 to 5 feet in height.
Distribution: Throughout eastern North America.
Habitat: Thin-leaved Sunflower is found in wet woods, forest margins, and near ponds and streams.
Similar Species: This species is very similar to Western Sunflower. The leaf petiole of Western Sunflower is much longer. The leaves of Pale-leafed Sunflower and Woodland Sunflower do not have the base of the leaf tapering down the sides of the leaf petiole.
