Identification: Plant low to the ground, spreading by leafy runners. Flowers pastel blue, streaked with white and darker blue. Lower petal lobe strongly bilobed and flanked by two elongate lateral petal lobes. Upper petal lobe short. Flowers arranged in a terminal spike, mixed with leaves. Stem naked, not hairy. Leaves lacking hairs, ovate, usually tinged with purple, especially on the undersides. Plant spreading by runners with small groups of leaves. Plant 4 to 8 inches in height.
Distribution: Michigan to eastern Canada, southward to Georgia and Texas. Also found in scattered western states.
Habitat: Bugle is a weed found in lawns, along roadsides, and in fields.
Flowering period: May to July.
